Web 2.0 Tools in Bloom's Taxonomy

Wow! Looking for cool web 2.0 tools?
Neat websites and ideas to learn?

Check out this site. It is an interactive Bloom's Taxonomy Pyramid with different tools to use at the different stages of learning. Each logo is a link to the site (not my picture / screenshot) but click the link!  We've used even more from what is on this pyramid, but we have used some!  This is teacher homework for the summer!

We've looked at many of these in my room including:
del.iciou.us
various google applications (such as Google Maps/World!)
Prezi
YouTube
RubiStar
Wikipedia

Japan Crisis

Our most recent issue of Time for Kids included an article about the tragedy in Japan.

We looked at a few additional resources that discussed earthquakes, tsunamies, and did a brief overview of some vocabulary before reading the magazine article.

Map of Damages from Japan Earthquake

Animated Definitions for Earthquake Terms and Concepts

Another blog with a ton of links about the crisis in Japan is called Tech Savvy Mama with a post on Online resources related to this topic!

Genre Study: Fantasy

As we read Chris Van Allsburg's "The Stranger" this week we'll be studying other fantasy examples in movies and literature.

In this preview from "Avatar" think about what is "normal" about Pandora, and what makes it a "fantasy"?

Turkey in Need of Dressing

By now you have seen this poor turkey.
He or she really needed dressing.

And wow, what outfits they came back to school in!

Elvis, Police Captain, disco dancer, professional golfer, rock star, and many more creative costumes!

In class students have been working on this "Character Baseball Card" to help with character development.

Our next writing project is a biography of these Turkeys!

Want to dress another turkey complete with a crown, leggings, and sunglasses?  It still isn't as cute as some of the ones at school right now!

A Cog Is...

So What is a Cog?

A cog, or rack, railroad uses a gear, "cog wheel", meshing into a special rack rail (mounted in the middle between the outer rails) to climb much steeper grades than those possible with a standard adhesion railroad.
See the middle part of the railroad track? Where there are 3 parallel lines instead of the standard two? That's where those cog's are. This helps climb the steep sections and keep a slow decent on the way down.

An adhesion railroad (regular train on flat distances) can only climb grades of 4 to 6%, with very short sections of up to 9%. This is measure as the number of feet in elevation gained for every 100 feet in distance. A "rack" railroad can climb grades of up to 48% (such as in Switzerland), depending upon the type of rack system employed.
Here is the explanation from the US Department of Transportation.
Q-2. What is the maximum grade hill a railcar can climb?
A. Railroad
grades are more or less determined by available locomotive horsepower and
traction efforts required to pull a specified number of railroad cars up a
grade, as well as the braking effort required to control the movement when going
down the grade.

Railroad grades are expressed in terms of the rise or fall of elevation
over distance. For instance, a 1 percent grade would be a one-foot rise or fall
of elevation over a distance of 100 feet.
The Manitou and Pikes Peak Railway Cog can travel at up to a 25% grade going up the mountain. It reaches a top speed of 9 miles per hour.

Above the clouds at the top of the mountain. There were 2 cog's running the day of our trip. There are sections where the two can pass on parallel tracks on the mountain.

Learn more by going to the Pikes Peak Cog Railway Site.
Pssst! Did you see the new pictures in the slide show on the left side of the blog?

Online Reading Materials

This morning my reading class worked on the reading website.

We looked at how to find the materials for each week's story, the vocabulary, and the focus skill for that week.

Please feel free to read, use and explore any of these materials at home!

Students do need their district user name and password to log in. My class has these in their planners on a label, so check it out!

Big Scholastic Thank You

I want to give a big thank you to the families that ordered books from our Scholastic Book order in September. Scholastic offers deep discounts on books for families (and teachers) to helps to foster the love of reading. While I am a BIG proponent of using the free resources (like the school or public library) there are occasions where owning a book can have a big impact on a child.

Check out all the free books we got from Scholastic thanks to your orders.

I also have a few more free books coming soon because parents ordered online!

Our next book order will be in the beginning of October. I have posted the October book order on www.scholastic.com/bookclubs if you want to check it out early! Use our class activation code GNTJN when you create a parent account. Flyers will be sent home in a few weeks but check it out early online!

Angel Island Experience

In our reading text this week students follow the journey of a young Chinese boy as he is detained at Angel Island awaiting to join his father in the United States. This text is historical fiction and a great opportunity to talk as a family about where your ancestors came from.

For more information and stories about real people that came to the United States through Angel Island, check out the website "Angel Island: Immigrant Journeys of Chinese-Americans."
